How strong is Mazatapec? What has and has not been measured

Measured values against shop descriptions

Updated

No published laboratory study has measured the psilocybin content of Mazatapec. We searched PubMed and Europe PMC on 10 October 2026: the cultivar name appears in one review of cubensis strains and in one genome study, and neither gives a potency figure. What can be said about its strength comes from studies of other cubensis cultivars, and those show that a cultivar name predicts less than many product pages suggest.

What the genome tells you

In 2021 a sequencing project read the genomes of 81 Psilocybe samples, among them spore samples sold as Mazatapec (McKernan et al., 2021). The authors looked at the cluster of genes that the fungus uses to make psilocybin. In Mazatapec, as in a sample of the Huautla cultivar, that cluster was complete.

That tells you Mazatapec has the full machinery to make psilocybin. It does not tell you how much it makes. Gene content and the amount of a compound in a dried mushroom are different things, and the study did not measure the second.

How much cubensis cultivars differ

Two recent studies measured several cultivars with the same method. Neither included Mazatapec.

  • A 2024 study of five cultivars found psilocybin contents between 0.88 and 1.36 percent of dry weight (Goff et al., 2024).
  • A 2026 study grew 14 cultivars under identical conditions and found total tryptamines between 2.62 and 20.65 mg per gram of dried mushroom, a difference of almost eight times between the weakest and the strongest (Sharchaton et al., 2026).

So cultivars can differ a lot. Where Mazatapec falls in that range is unknown.

Three things that move the numbers more than the name

The single mushroom. In the 2026 study, mushrooms of one cultivar grown in the same chamber differed in psilocybin content by a coefficient of variation of 12.8 to 23.4 percent. A gram from one mushroom is not the same as a gram from the next.

The flush. An older study of cubensis cultures found that psilocybin varied by up to a factor of four between flushes of the same culture, and that psilocin was usually absent in the first flush and highest around the fourth (Bigwood and Beug, 1982). A kit that gives several flushes does not give the same mushroom each time.

Storage. A Czech study found the largest losses in fresh mushrooms kept frozen and the smallest in dried mushrooms kept dark at room temperature (Gotvaldová et al., 2021). The same study found no psilocybin or related compounds in the spores.

What the shop says

Dutch-Smart's XXL product page describes Mazatapec as "a calm, introspective variety" with "a calmer, more introspective character" than well-known cultivars such as Mexican and Thai (Mazatapec XXL). The same page advises, for anyone trying freshly harvested Mazatapec for the first time, to start low and build up gradually, because the moisture content of fresh mushrooms varies between harvests.

These are shop descriptions. They may reflect what customers report. No published study has compared the experience of Mazatapec with that of other cultivars, and the description has not been tested against a lab measurement.

Mazatapec or Golden Teacher?

People who compare kits often set Mazatapec next to Golden Teacher. On strength, the evidence for both is thin:

MazatapecGolden Teacher
Published potency measurementnonenone for the cultivar itself; a Jack Frost × Golden Teacher cross measured 11.38 mg/g in 2026
Psilocybin genescomplete cluster (2021 genome study)not reported in the studies cited here
Documented originnone; claimed Mazatec regionnone

On the evidence available, nobody can say which of the two is stronger. Within a single culture, psilocybin can vary up to fourfold between flushes, so one session with each says little about the names. Golden Teacher kits are sold by the same shop in the same formats, for example the Golden Teacher 1200cc.

What this means in practice

Weight is only a rough guide to how much psilocybin a portion contains, and the Trimbos Institute, the Netherlands Institute of Mental Health and Addiction, warns that it is difficult to judge how much is needed (drugsinfo.nl). With home-grown mushrooms of an unmeasured cultivar, from an unknown flush, that is even more true. The effects page covers what this means for safety, and the kit guide compares the three Mazatapec kits.
