Which Mazatapec kit should you choose? 1200 cc, FreshMushrooms or XXL

Three sizes of the same cultivar

Updated

All three Mazatapec kits at Dutch-Smart contain the same cultivar, so the choice is about handling and volume. For a first kit, the standard Mazatapec 1200cc is the usual starting point. If you want the least work and the lowest risk of contamination, the shop points to the fully colonised Mazatapec FreshMushrooms. If you have grown a kit before and want more mycelium in one box, the Mazatapec XXL has 2100 cc. Kits are legal to buy in the Netherlands; the mushrooms are not, and abroad the local law applies (law page).

From first kit to experienced grower

Think of the three kits as steps on a scale from least to most involved:

  1. Least handling: FreshMushrooms. The block is fully grown through, so there is no soaking step. The shop says you only spray a little water into the kit now and then, and that the risk of contamination is lower. This suits someone who wants to follow the manual and do as little as possible to the block.
  2. The standard kit: 1200 cc. The classic format, with a substrate of rye and perlite under a layer of vermiculite. You soak it on arrival, which is one extra step, and in return the shop gives a yield figure: 400 to 600 grams across several flushes. The shop calls it "an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced growers".
  3. Most volume: XXL 2100 cc. Almost twice the mycelium of the 1200 cc kit. The shop aims it at growers "who have already used a smaller kit and are ready for a bigger volume". The shop expects a substantial harvest across several flushes, with the first usually the largest. A bigger block also means more surface to keep clean and moist.

Which one suits you

Choose the FreshMushrooms kit if you have never grown anything and want the fewest steps. It is also the kit for someone who will be away for a day after delivery, because it may wait in the fridge for one day.

Choose the 1200 cc kit if you want the standard format with a stated yield and do not mind soaking the block on the day it arrives.

Choose the XXL kit if you have grown a kit before, have a warm and clean spot with room for a bigger bag, and want more mycelium in one box.

Before you order

  • Be in the Netherlands. A kit is legal to buy there. The mushrooms it produces fall under the Opium Act as soon as they appear. In the United Kingdom and Germany growing them is a crime, and under US federal law psilocybin is a Schedule I substance.
  • Be ready on delivery day. All three kits are fresh, living products. The 1200 cc kit should be soaked immediately; the other two can wait in the fridge for a day or two at most.
  • Be 18 or older. Dutch-Smart sells to adults only.
  • Read the manual first. It comes with the kit in Dutch and English and describes soaking, misting and the flushes.

Does the kit change the mushroom?

Not as far as anyone has measured. The cultivar is the same in all three boxes. What does change the mushrooms you end up with is the flush, the single mushroom and how they are stored afterwards, as the strength page explains. The shop describes Mazatapec as a calmer, more introspective cultivar; that is a shop description, and the effects page sets out what is known from published sources.

Why only Mazatapec here

This site covers one cultivar. Dutch-Smart sells the same three formats for other cubensis cultivars as well, such as Golden Teacher, Mexican and Thai. The origin page explains what sets Mazatapec apart on paper: a Mexican name with a claimed Oaxacan origin, and little else that has been documented.
