What is in the name

Updated

Mazatapec is a cultivar of Psilocybe cubensis, the magic mushroom species grown in almost every Dutch grow kit. Its name points to the Mazatec region in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, and a 2025 review of cubensis strains describes it as "connected to the rich spiritual traditions of the Mazatec region" (Kurzbaum et al., 2025). Nobody has published who first collected it, where exactly, or when.

What is documented and what is told

Two things about Mazatapec can be checked. It is a P. cubensis culture: a US genomics team sequenced spore samples sold under the name in 2021 and found a complete set of the genes that make psilocybin (McKernan et al., 2021). And P. cubensis does grow in Oaxaca, where the Mexican mycologist Gastón Guzmán recorded it in cattle pastures and listed it among the species used there (Guzmán, 2008).

Everything else on a product label is told, not measured: the exact place of collection, the calm character, the claim that it grows a little slower than other Mexican cultivars. This site keeps the two apart. The origin page sets out what the name can and cannot tell you.

Three kits, one cultivar

Dutch-Smart sells Mazatapec in three formats: a standard 1200 cc kit on rye (Mazatapec 1200cc), a fully colonised FreshMushrooms kit that needs no soaking (Mazatapec FreshMushrooms) and an XXL kit with 2100 cc of mycelium (Mazatapec XXL). The kit guide compares them side by side, and Mazatapec in the grow kit follows one kit from soaking to the last flush.

A grow kit can be bought legally in the Netherlands. The mushrooms it produces cannot: they fall under the Opium Act as soon as they appear. Outside the Netherlands the law of the country of delivery applies, and in the United Kingdom, Germany and under US federal law growing them is a criminal offence. The law page covers the details, checked on 10 October 2026.

Strength and effects

No laboratory has published a potency figure for Mazatapec. What is known about strength comes from studies of other cubensis cultivars, and it shows that the flush, the single mushroom and storage move the numbers as much as the name does. The strength page explains this, including how Mazatapec compares with Golden Teacher. The effects page describes what people report during a session and which situations carry the most risk.

This site is published by the team behind Dutch-Smart; the about page explains how it is made.
